John Teller, Shawano golfer, to play in VGA National Championship

By:  Jacy Zollar, sports@wolfrivermedia.com
Veteran John Teller’s lifelong passion for golf became his “saving grace” after returning from the military.

After honing his game over the past several years, he’ll compete against 79 other veterans from around the country from Oct. 8-11 at the Veteran Golfers Association National Championship in Mississippi.

Teller was one of 20 golfers in the central region to advance to the tournament after qualifying at the regional championship in Michigan in August. He is of six Wisconsin golfers in the tournament.

“I’m very honored and proud to not only represent my community, family and branch of service in the military, but also the nation and patriots throughout time that have provided us the freedom to be able to enjoy things like this in our country,” Teller said.

Teller said his zeal for golf dates back to childhood when his father introduced him to the game with a set of rummage sale clubs. He quickly picked up the sport and played through high school and college.

Teller joined the U.S. Marine Corps in 1999 and continued playing while stationed in Japan and California. After a nine-month deployment to Iraq in 2003, he finished his enlistment with side-effects that many veterans face.

“I was facing a lot of issues from being on the front lines in combat,” Teller said. “Things like PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder) and anger management. I had a lot of problems being around people and it was just a rough part of life at that time.”

A few years after returning home, Teller decided to pick up a club and find the greens again.

“I went back to something I enjoyed doing — I went back to being on the course,” he said. “It was exactly what I needed. I didn’t have to be around a lot of people, I could relax and had my space. It helped me in a therapeutic fashion, which is called adaptive sports today.”

Teller realized the relief and joy golf could bring to other vets and decided to look into starting an organization. He discovered the VGA in 2014, a small nonprofit competitive golf organization that is dedicated to promoting golf for vets and families of all ages and disabilities.

Teller joined shortly after it was created and helped expand the organization nationwide. The VGA has 2,500 members, and Teller serves as regional director for 13 states in the central region.

“My whole goal with the organization was to help the many soldiers and their families avoid the darkness I went through,” Teller said. “Initially, I thought, ‘Hey, if I can even help one person find a light and joy through the game like I did, this will be worth the time and energy.’ And now we have over 2,000 people — and growing — who are finding that lightness. It’s incredible.”

Shawano Lake Golf Course and Thornberry Creek in Oneida are home to many VGA events throughout the year.

“While it operates on a competitive level, it’s really for all people of all ages and skill level, and I want to expose as many people in Wisconsin and Shawano to it as I can,” Teller said. “It’s all-encompassing, so there are divisions for wounded warriors, regular vets and family members.”

Teller said the diversity within the organization helps the vets associate with people who have had similar experiences.

That fellowship will be on display at the VGA National Championship.

“It’s 80 of the best veteran golfers throughout the country,” he said. “The VGA pretty much rolls out the red carpet for us. It’s very much a prestigious experience. The golfers have everything taken care of.”

While Teller feels a personal sense of accomplishment in qualifying for the event, he feels that the tournament holds a bigger meaning.

“During times like this when there’s a lot of divisive things going on, I think it’s really important to express our patriotism in this country and the gratitude that we’re afforded the opportunity to go to an event this,” he said.

Zook qualifies for state golf meet

Shawano’s Brianna Zook qualified for state Tuesday by shooting a 90 on the par-72 Thornberry Creek Golf Course at a WIAA Division 1 sectional.

Zook, who finished fourth, was one of three individual qualifiers from the tournament in Oneida, joining Waupaca’s Mark Ash (82) and Notre Dame’s Emily Conard (92).
Bay Port’s Jo Baranczyk (76) placed first.

Zook is a three-time sectional qualifier, but this is her first time making it to state.

“It feels great to qualify my senior year,” she said. “I’m proud that I was able to shoot a 90 today because it was tough out there with the wind.”

Shawano placed fifth at the tournament in Oneida with a score of 399, finishing behind Bay Port (369), Green Bay Preble (381), Waupaca (384) and Notre Dame (392). Bay Port and Preble advanced to state as teams.

The state meet will be held Oct. 9 and 10 in Madison.

Rickie Fowler to carry Green Bay Packers bag at Erin Hills

Rickie Fowler is ready to be adored by Green Bay Packers fans.

The 28-year-old will already be one of the favorites at next week’s U.S. Open at Erin Hills in Wisconsin, but he’s upping the ante by carrying a green and gold Cobra bag all week, according to Golf Digest.

What normally is a combination of Oklahoma State colors — orange and black or gray — will appeal to the tens of thousands of the Wisconsin fans expected at Erin Hills next week. Everyone knows the quickest way to a Wisconsin fan’s heart is through the Packers, right? They’re about as avid as sports fans can be. Just last week two Packers fans drove more than four hours—in one direction, no less—to Green Bay just to give defensive back Davon House a ride after he missed his flight.

Fowler will tee off at 8:35 a.m. local time Thursday morning.

Are trees really 90 percent air? An investigation

For the record, every time someone says, “Go ahead, go for it…trees are 90 percent air,” I always reply, “Yeah, well so are screen doors, and I’m not hitting through them, either.”

Still, it’s one of those golfisms that no one really knows if it’s true. So we decided to check it out. How? By hitting golf balls into trees. LOTS of them. The bottom line: They’re not 90 percent air.

Not. Even. Close.

We picked out six different species of trees (sugar maple, red cedar, spruce, oak, red maple and white pine) at Rock Ridge CC in Newtown, CT. This provided a variety of dense and sparse combinations of timber, leaves or needles. We picked a spot where a reasonable shot would be played that would have to go through the tree to reach the green. We lasered the yardage and then had our human robot, Joel Beall (a scratch golfer), hit 10 balls with only one mandate — the ball had to go through the tree and he was to try and hit the spot he felt was best to get it to the green. In other words, just as if he were playing golf. After the balls were struck, we lasered from the ball to the flagstick. Luckily, only one ball nearly hit us on the rebound.

After all the shots were recorded we broke out the good ol’ Excel spreadsheet and went to work. Here’s what we found. The overall average of the shots went only 41.54 percent of the distance to the flagstick. The median was almost identical at 40.81 percent. The respective averages and medians for the various trees were as follows:

Sugar Maple: 46.80% average; 51.92% median

JB comment: Far from a stomach punch with few rejections, but zero shots escaped unharmed. Like watching a fullback shed off the first tackler, slowly stiff-arm another and brought down by pursuer number three…only for a four-yard gain.

Red Cedar: 12.30%; 3.74%

JB comment: Red cedars, nature’s brick wall. You have a better chance of getting one by Rudy Gobert than sneaking a Titleist through a red cedar.

Spruce: 21.28%; 10.83%

JB comment: It was here where I started to question not only the futility of this exercise, but life in general. Watching perfectly-struck 6-irons travel 30 yards will do that to a man.

Oak: 51.72%; 75.82%

JB comment: Finally, some hope. Aside from one ball nearly taking us out off a rejection, most of these shots came to rest just off the green. What I’m trying to say is (sniff), I love the Oak, and I’d like all of you to love Oak, too

Red Maple: 36.92%; 22.65%

JB comment: Much like Taylor Swift, the maple looks innocuous, but it will crush your soul.

White Pine: 80.20%; 79.90%

JB comment: Almost no resistance, with two shots finishing within 10 feet of the flag. If you find yourself behind one of these bad boys, fire away.

As you can see, the shot through the trees is almost always a low percentage shot and almost a no percentage shot through a red cedar. The white pine and oak at least offer a reasonable opportunity. However, before you try the hero shot you should be aware that of the 60 swats taken, only two found the green. That’s an average of 3.33 percent — or about the same as you’d get trying to go through a screen door.

Aaron Rodgers’s offseason plan: Golf takes a back seat

Professional athletes all have their offseason vices, and golf is one of the popular ones. That is, until it hurts your in-season abilities.

For Aaron Rodgers to get in the best shape of his career, he felt he needed to cut back on golf, according to a report from Rob Demovsky of ESPN.

“I put a lot of work in this offseason,” Rodgers said Tuesday. “As much as I love golf, it’s kind of taken a back seat to my workouts, and I’m light as I’ve been I think ever coming back at this time of the year.”

Rodgers, who boasts a 4.0 handicap index (per the Wisconsin State Golf Association), hasn’t posted a score since June of 2016. That might be too much time away from golf. That being said, as Demovsky notes, Rodgers was able to work in a few rounds at the AT&T National Pro-Am in February. He and Jerry Kelly missed the cut by six strokes.

Michelle Wie joins Callaway after Nike leaves hard golf goods industry

Former Nike staffers are scattering to all ends of the equipment universe. Following an announcement in 2016 that Nike would no longer produce clubs and golf balls, professional golfers who had played their equipment were left without clubs to swing or balls to hit in the future. They ended up with a variety of companies.

Tiger Woods went to TaylorMade. Rory McIlroy went to Callaway and Titleist (without a contract). Patrick Rodgers went to Callaway. Brooks Koepka is playing a mix of TaylorMade and Mizuno. On the women’s side, the most famous name (and player who had been with Nike the longest), Michelle Wie, is headed to Callaway.

“Joining Callaway feels like a natural partnership,” Wie said recently. “I believe that they make the best equipment in golf, and that their clubs are really going to help me have a great year. I also admire how they make the game fun and accessible to fans, and make them feel like they are part of the experience. That’s something that’s really important to me.”

Wie played Callaway at the recent Pure Silk Bahamas LPGA Classic and shot 73-74. She did not make the cut. She did, however, tell Golfweek that putting new sticks in her bag is scary.

“I haven’t even touched anything since I was maybe 15,” Wie told Golfweek. “That’s a really long time, so obviously I was, you know, really scared.”

Wie will continue to wear Nike attire and shoes.
